Background and career path of the Denver Broncos general manager.
Paton played defensive back at UCLA and earned a history degree before a brief professional career in the Italian and Austrian football leagues. He broke into NFL scouting with the Chicago Bears in 1997, then spent time as the Dolphins' director of pro personnel before a long run with the Minnesota Vikings, where he rose to assistant general manager under Rick Spielman. The Denver Broncos hired him as general manager in January 2021 after years of him being one of the most sought-after GM candidates in the league.
Paton's biggest swings reshaped the Broncos' direction: he hired Sean Payton as head coach and, in the 2024 draft, selected quarterback Bo Nix to lead a new era after the franchise's costly quarterback experiments. The son of a high school football coach, he is regarded as a thorough, well-connected evaluator who interviewed for GM jobs around the league for years before taking the Denver post.

The Denver Broncos have been paying a premium this season, with several contracts that outpace the expected production level. Across 21 contracts, 4 grade out as good value and 4 look like overpays based on comparable deals around the league. The best bang-for-the-buck deal was Garrett Nelson (D+) at $0.9M/yr — getting defensive end production well above the price point. The priciest commitment relative to production was Tycen Anderson (D-) at $1.5M/yr — the safety market may have been richer than the on-field return suggests. Cap flexibility could become a concern if these contracts don't produce at the expected level.
George Paton has made outstanding moves for the Denver Broncos this 2026 cycle, drawing widespread praise from fans and media. Of 35 graded moves, 4 landed well with the fanbase, 12 drew mixed reactions, and 19 were viewed negatively. The standout move was bringing in Devon Key (A+), which generated the most positive buzz. The most questioned decision was the Jaylen Waddle trade (F), which drew the sharpest criticism. Patience is wearing thin. The front office needs early-season results to justify the approach.

Each GM grade is rolled up from the underlying transactions attributed to that GM's tenure. When a GM signs a player, that signing's Contract Value Index grade flows into the GM's portfolio score; the same player's subsequent performance and sentiment grades flow into the GM's respective summaries. Phased attribution applies for new GMs: the first three years weight the prior GM's legacy deals at 100%/66%/33%, ramping the new GM's ownership of roster outcomes.
For broader context, the NFL hub has team rankings, GM report cards, and the transactions feed. The NFL GM rankings page ranks every front office side-by-side on the same four dimensions.
