Overview
Dynamic combo guard with explosive scoring ability and improving playmaking. Peterson has the most electric skill set in the class with elite shot creation off the dribble. His roller-coaster consistency has opened debate at the top, but the talent ceiling is the highest in the draft. Missed 11 games due to injuries but dominated when available.
Background
Darryn Peterson arrived at Kansas as the consensus No. 1 recruit in the 2025 class, having won Naismith High School Player of the Year honors at Prolific Prep in Napa, California. Originally from Canton, Ohio, Peterson reclassified and was a McDonald's All-American before committing to Kansas.
His freshman season was marked by brilliance and frustration in equal measure. When healthy, he looked like the clear No. 1 pick, posting 20.2 points per game on efficient shooting. However, he missed 11 games due to various injuries including flu-like symptoms, which kept scouts from seeing a full body of work. His spectacular 18 points in 20 minutes against AJ Dybantsa and BYU on January 31 reminded everyone of his elite ceiling.
